We take so many daily tasks for granted. When you’re well, clipping nails is not a huge deal but when you develop arthritis or some other limitation, it becomes a problem.
When I assess a client, I look at them from head to toe if they will allow. I especially focus on hygiene issues and look at their nails and fingers. What I notice is the cleanliness and length. I will also look at their fine motor coordination and hand strength. Just looking at a hand tells me a lot about their overall function. Dirty long nails tell me they can’t take of that task.
To help facilitate independence, I’ve been making a simple gadget with some Douglas clear fir and a small machine screw to hold down the clipper. Many have better grasp holding it with the index to pinky than just using the typical prehensor grasp which includes the thumb, index, and middle finger. One can even place this device on a small table and use a palm to clip the nails.
Many of my clients are fiercely independent and as much as I can, I will problem solve a way to accomplish that goal.
